Weedon Island Preserve is one of the best inshore kayak and flats fishing areas in the Tampa Bay region. Its mangrove shorelines, oyster edges, and grass flats are perfect habitat for redfish, snook, speckled trout, and juvenile tarpon, with plenty of calm water to explore. Work potholes and mangrove points on a rising tide, then target cuts and drains on the outgoing tide when bait funnels out. Light tackle shines here: live shrimp under a popping cork, soft plastics on jigheads, and small topwaters at dawn. It’s a “cover water and read the tide” fishery—quiet approaches and accurate casts near mangrove shade lines often make the difference.
