The Mater Academy Grand Slam Challenge is a one-day fishing tournament in Key Largo that raises money for the Mater Academy High School baseball program in Hialeah Gardens. Teams compete for the heaviest combined weight of up to three fish, no two of the same species. The target species are mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna (blackfin, yellowfin and bigeye), mackerel (king, Spanish and cero) and cobia. A $500 bonus goes to the biggest swordfish.
Lines go in at sunrise, and video proof is required for every contending catch. The weigh-in runs from 3 to 4 p.m. at Snappers Oceanfront Restaurant in Key Largo. Boats may carry up to four anglers; the captain and up to two junior anglers may be exempt from that count.
